Discovering that I have allergies to disperse dye was heartbreaking because I have a deep passion for fashion and shoes. As a child, I loved dressing up and making clothing for my Barbies. Upon initial receipt of the diagnosis, there was a sense of hopefulness. In retrospect, it became evident that this initial sentiment was, in fact, a state of denial. This initial reaction was partly due to my lack of discernment. How difficult is it to find 100% cotton or linen? Well, it’s more challenging than it looks. It is more so tricky for footwear. I experienced an overwhelming frustration as I realized that my clothing choices limited my ability to express myself and that my current lifestyle habits were not environmentally sustainable. At this stage, I was now angry at myself and the world. Why me?
From Anger to Bargaining
Socks and shoe linings mainly comprise a polyester, elastane, nylon, and cotton blend. That is still a challenge today. I came across two 100% cotton sock styles, but unfortunately, neither worked. One was too rigid due to how it fit, and the other looked like baby booties. Being unable to wear shoes without socks or proper lining due to allergies is a common problem, especially with the prevalence of synthetic fibers and dispersed dyes in most shoes. I tried purchasing socks made from different cotton blends, hoping they would work despite being white. This what-if stage marked the bargaining stage of my grief. Would the outcome be different had I known sooner?
Depression Hit In Waves Of Anger
One of the most apparent signs of this allergy in shoes was the blisters that developed after a few minutes of wearing them. These blisters did not develop because of the tight shoe or friction. I didn’t have to walk in them for blisters to develop, and it also happened with dark-colored socks on. These blisters formed on the top, sides, back, and bottom of my feet. Unable to find socks or suitable shoes further immobilized me. Anger returned with bouts of depression. Some days, even simple tasks like going to the store felt like too much. I put a lot of effort into my appearance, so being unable to do things as I used to was discouraging. It felt like a kaleidoscope of emotions – sometimes I’d feel angry, sometimes I’d try to bargain with the situation, and sometimes I didn’t want to believe it. Until….
The Sustainable Silver Lining
I found a shoe company called CYDWOQ, pronounced “sidewalk.” They create sustainable shoes made with water-based glues and vegetable-tanned leather. This incredible shoe company was a thrilling and delightful discovery. Summer in Texas made it unfathomable to even think about wearing pants in the scorching 100-degree heat; covering up my socks was the last thing on my mind! So, CYDWOQ was a welcomed relief. They are the silver lining no need for socks. I invested in two pairs of sandals. The shoe size I ordered was 7.5 US (37.5), and these shoes are true to size.
Sustainable Shoes Looks Good
The first pair I purchased is called Revival. Looking back, it is such a fitting name. They are stylish, sustainable, and vintage classics. These open-toe sandals are composed of braided leather. They are classy and easy to pair with shorts or dresses. These sandals are timeless and wearable for years to come. What if they break? CYDWOQ also repairs shoes. Who knew sustainability looked this good? Before you knew it, I was dressed decent to go to the grocery store.
Zen Energy Of Overdressing
The second pair of shoes I purchased are called Zen. These shoes are a classy variation of a flip-flop. Upon buying these sandals, I intended to incorporate them into my daily at-home attire or for quick outings. These sandals elevate the overall look of my casual wear. It is important to note that my wardrobe consists mainly of essential items. So, when these sandals upgraded my look, I elevated to cloud nine. They look simple, but it’s that simplistic style that complements casual wear. Despite being slightly overdressed, I made the right call by wearing these well-crafted and comfortable shoes everywhere. These shoes are a valuable investment, and I haven’t encountered any issues with them despite not being gentle.
Court Date With Sustainable Shoes Styles Done Right
CYDWOQ has truly made a mark with its collection of sustainable and stylish shoes. What sets them apart is their customization options and a wide array of colors. I have found that these shoes look great and provide exceptional comfort. I haven’t experienced blistering or irritation while wearing them, so I’m now interested in exploring other closed-toe options, such as the Court flats. The Court flats resemble ballet flats, but what sets them apart is the colorful accent across the top. The pointed tip of these shoe designs creates the illusion of elongated legs. Moreover, their versatility allows them to enhance any outfit effortlessly.
Rebel or Revolt
I’ve added the Rebel sandal with a low wooden block heel to my sustainable shoes wish list. This unique shoe is technically a clog, featuring a wooden bottom covering only the front portion, leaving the back open. It comes in black or red. Additionally, I’m also interested in the Revolt, another stylish option that bears a resemblance to the Rebel. Unlike any others I’ve seen before, these clogs are visually appealing. Unlike traditional clogs, the CYDWOQ clogs stand out for their sustainability and lack of dispersed dyes. What’s more, they are biodegradable. These unique qualities make these shoes an intriguing choice for me.
Acceptance At Last
As I embrace this stage of my journey, I find myself genuinely grateful for my allergy. It has prompted me to seek out more eco-friendly alternatives actively. Moreover, it has heightened my awareness of the detrimental effects of dispersed dyes on human health and the environment in the long run. Additionally, it has catalyzed my recognition of the pervasive presence of plastic in our everyday surroundings. Before this awakening, I erroneously believed that recycling was a good enough solution to environmental issues. It didn’t even occur to me that sustainable shoes existed.
